Nothing Somethings

When I heard of our local community theater’s needs for funds I had an idea for a fundraiser and wanted to help. Along with a friend of mine, we worked tirelessly to create this unique show; we prepped and planned, wrote and rehearsed, choreographed and casted - eventually it was born; A valentine variety show for the city.

Honestly it was a giant undertaking, more work than we could ever have imagined. It was also an absolute blast!

What I loved about it the most was that we created a space for people to share their talents, it brought the community together in a positive way, and it was something born out of nothing. A seed of an idea, a vision between two people. Then all of a sudden (after blood sweat and tears) there it was! Something for the whole city to enjoy!

Creation is like that, in any form, and it never ceases to amaze me.

When I hear a song that moves me I automatically start choreographing in my head. An artful message can be created that never was before, through movement. With intention and openness…and hard work of course, a dance is created that now tells that song’s story.

That same feeling comes from kitchen to table for me. You know when you plan prep and prepare a meal and then you lay it on the table how there’s a moment? When I call everyone in to eat and I see the end result of my work. I feel a sense of pride and peace - something from my hands and time…out of nothing.

A Gardner might plant a seed and tend to the soil where there is only empty ground. Knowing that in the right season this little plant will come up for air and reveal its green leaves in due time. It was nothing, but with intention and care, it becomes a beautiful bloom any passerby can enjoy.

As we dive into early Spring, hoping with all hope, that winter stays at bay…I wonder what creations we are on the cusp of. What ideas are stirring in your head waiting to be planted? What nuances in your day do you create something out of nothing?

Small or big, we are constantly creating. Do we take that pause to acknowledge the beauty of it? That run that was completed. The connection a text made. The pretend game with a toddler. The new process for a business.

Whatever it might be, we create. Because we are created.

Flowing from the idea that we have our own palette of paints - different gifts and skills and desires - and every day we have a new canvas. Every moment even. What a neat opportunity to paint something out of nothing, just to be enjoyed.

May we keep painting pictures from the empty spaces, and fill our days and relationships with more beauty and color then there was the moment before. And perhaps, take pause to notice the beautiful somethings we worked out of nothing.

Happy creating, may JOY be the brush you pick up the most.
